Lean times have dictated the changes. Maryland is looking at an estimated $1.6 billion deficit. The federal funding that helped bridge budget gaps in the past will end this year. Gov. O’Malley has indicated that the shortfall will be made up through budget cuts rather than taxes.
The Governor’s first inauguration in 2007 included a parade in Annapolis as well as a formal ball at the Baltimore Convention Center. For this second inauguration, there will be a “cocktail business attire” reception at Baltimore’s Fifth Regiment Armory. Tickets are $75 per person, $50 for students and seniors. Guests have been asked to bring a canned or nonperishable food item for the Maryland Food Bank.

I’m honored to see that the govenor’s planners have decided to take a less costly event this year. Because of our troubled economy, this celebraton is more affordable for the average citizen.
