13, the musical plays tonight and tomorrow night

Think back to teenage years. Were yours comprised of functioning as the champion of the clique, sporting designer duds, and arriving late to school in your cool sports car, something like the crew in the classic Clueless movie? Or, were yours challenged with navigating your selfhood amidst a slew toilet bowl swirlies and paper airplanes? Surely, you came out of middle and high school okay, but the status of a young character crafted by Studio 180 Dance is not so concrete. Evan Goldman, the main character of the Studio’s upcoming musical, grapples with negotiating high school, religion, and friendships in 13! The Musical. Keep reading for a complete synopsis of the musical and details about this can’t miss show.

Haven’t heard of this musical or the company from which it comes? You’re in for a treat on both ends. Studio 180 Dance sits at 131 Gibralter Avenue in Annapolis and teaches everything from jazz to hip-hop to kindergarten-age beginners to high school-age achieved dancers. Boys and girls are welcomed at the dance studio. For the public, Studio 180 Dance hosts Zumba fitness classes regularly.

The musical is the first performance to be given by the students of the summer intensive dance program at Studio 180. The synopsis goes something like the general troubling teenage tale: the main character is tasked with making new, popular friends at the expense of genuine ones, going through the time-consuming steps of a Bar Mitzvah, wrestling with faith versus popularity, and surviving culture shock. The reason for all this trouble (aside from the fact it makes a darn good performance)? Evan moves from the comforts of long-estbalished New York City life to rural Indiana. On top of this, Evan experiences typical 13-year-old boy challenges, making his move from boyhood to manhood a slightly terrifying one. Music will be provided by a live orchestra, conducted by none other than former USNA conductor, Commander Raymond Ascione.

The musical is only available two days: this Friday and Saturday, August 2 and 3. The start time is 7 p.m. and there is no intermission. See the 90-minute performance by purchasing tickets via phone: 410-268-5299. The cost is $15 for adults and $12 for students and children. Both performances are held at the Severn Campus of Annapolis Area Christian School, located at 109 Burns Crossing Road in Severn, Maryland.

Going to see this performance will translate to a few things: you’ll help a local dance studio, generate interest in their future endeavors, and perhaps reminisce in your youthful days. Bring a friend and enjoy. You can find more information at http://www.studio180dance.com/programs/2013-summer-theater-program.
